The 10th annual Raul Julia Bicycle Challenge to End Hunger will take place in the Philadelphia area on Sunday, September 18th, 2005. This year's bike challenge will originate at 9:00am in Lower Perkioman Park in Oaks, PA. Riders will have three options. Three rides follow the Schuykill River Trail: a 25 mile ride from Perkioman to Conshocken and back, a 50 mile ride from Lower Perkioman Park to the Philadelphia Art Museum and back, and for those who want more of a challenge, you can leave the trail to follow John Fitzgerald up “The Wall” in Manayunk on the way back. For advanced riders there is a 50-mile ride off the trail through the hills of Montgomery County.

Rollerbladers are welcome on the 25-mile route. All participants need to have the proper safety equipment, including helmets (and protection for all limbs for rollerbladers) in order to ride.

The Raul Julia Bicycle Challenge to End Hunger was started 10 years ago by a small group of committed individuals who are passionate about ending global hunger in our lifetime. The ride was named in honor of Raul Julia, the stage and movie actor best known for his starring roles in The Addams Family and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Raul Julia was passionately committed to ending hunger in the world, and worked closely with The Hunger Project to reach this goal.

The Hunger Project is a leading organization in the fight to end world hunger. Each day, 20,000 people die as a consequence of chronic, persistent hunger. Approximately 800 million people live in conditions of poverty so severe that they are unable to obtain enough food to meet their daily requirements. Today ending hunger is not primarily a technical or a production issue; it is a human issue. The Hunger Project is committed to ending hunger and developing permanent, society-wide solutions to the problem that empower those in need to do for themselves, and in the process creating a new future - a future free from hunger.

In the first nine years of the ride, we have raised over $250,000 for The Hunger Project. The outstanding part of that accomplishment is that 100% of the money raised by the participants has benefited The Hunger Project. This achievement was accomplished by the dedication of volunteers, riders, and those individuals who donated their generous support to the riders. These include the corporate sponsors Amoroso, Bike Line, Clemens Markets, Comcast, Peace A Pizza, and Whole Foods.

This year our goal is to raise $25,000 for The Hunger Project. Please help us end hunger in our lifetime. If you have any questions, or would like more information, contact us (above) or visit our website at http://www.JuliaChallenge.org.
