This site will be an online source for information for the Bicycle Challenge happening in the Philadelphia area in the spring of 2007. The ride was named in honor of Raul Julia, a stage and movie actor, who was passionately committed to ending hunger and the work of The Hunger Project. He was tireless in speaking to others, especially in the entertainment community, in eliciting their financial contributions to the end of hunger
We are currently trying to determine whenther we should expand or change the event from a bike ride to another sporting event that will bring in more participants, and will not compete with all the other biking events in the area. Please send us suggestions if you have any! Previous years' bike rides originated in Lower Perkioman Park in Oaks, PA. We had three rides: a 25 and 50 mile ride along the Schuykill River Bike Trail, and for more advanced riders, a 2nd 50 mile ride off the trail through the hills of Montgomery County. Rollerbladers are welcome on the 25 mile route. The regular 50 mile ride travels along the Schuykill River Bike Trail from Lower Perkioman Park through Valley Forge, Manayunk and to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and then circles back to Lower Perkioman Park. The 25 mile ride goes to Conshohocken and back. Be sure you are at Lower Perkioma Park by 9:00 a.m. if you wish to ride! Be sure you read these Bike Safety Tips before you ride, and to wear your helmet. Rollerbladers must also wear all safety gear (including helmet, pads & protectors for all limbs) in order to ride.
Each participant in the Raul Julia Challenge to End Hunger pledges to raise a certain amount for the benefit of The Hunger Project, a global organization committed to the end of hunger. Please visit The Hunger Project website for more information about their work, and to donate directly to THP if you can't participate in this year's Challenge. In addition to the $25 registration fee ($26.90 Online), $30 between Aug. 2nd-Sept. 17th, and $35 on Sept. 18th (see our registration form for details), we ask that each participant choose a pledge goal for themselves that reflects a personsal commitment to unleasing the human spirit. You are encouraged to include the financial sponsorship from others in your pledge. (Sign-up sheets available here.) The dollar amount you choose will assist in funding the end of chronic persistent hunger among our global family. The money you raise will provide a future in which every child, woman and man has the opportunity to live a healthy and productive life. Know that you inspire others by your riding and your leadership. We are looking for people who would like to participate with us and the bike ride. There are many ways to assist us in funding a world free from hunger. You could:
- support someone else who's riding
- assist with ride planning
- volunteer on the day of the ride at a rest stop or as a lead or follow-up biker
- be a corporate sponsor...
In the first nine years of the ride, we've raised in excess of $250,000 for The Hunger Project. The outstanding part of that accomplishment is that 100% of all pledges raised by the participants benefitted The Hunger Project. This was accomplished by garnering corporate and in-kind contributions and donations to finance and support the ride.
This year we intend to raise at least $25,000 for The Hunger Project and to spin off support for local organizations through increased corporate participation.
